Class Happenings... It's going to be another great year at Akiva! A wonderful group of students comprise the Akiva Graduating Class of 2005: Libby, Ariel, Rachel, Eliana, Dorie, Evan, Abe, Henry, Zack, and Eli. With such a great group, we can expect to see marvelous things! We will live up to the motto hanging in our classroom: "This room is a magic place--we are making tomorrow!"
Our reading theme for Unit 2 is "The Living Earth." This unit brings to light a concern for the environment. It shows us how important it is to be a good observer of nature and ways we can protect the nature around us. As we exit the chapters on the Middle and Far Eastern Civilizations, the students find that their time travels take them to the days of the Roman Empire. We will study the geography, history and legacy of Rome. Aside from covering the material in our Social Studies book, the class has been working on a very special presentation for the remaining student body and interested visitors. The students have chosen a period of history that was of particular interest to them and researched it. They outlined the pertinent information and wrote a research paper. That was the difficult part! Now the fun begins as they bring their research papers to life! We can only tell you that special "passports" are required to travel through time with the sixth graders--the rest is up to your imagination! The exact date of this presentation will be posted in the next few weeks. Math classes continue to focus on work with all areas of fractions and decimals. Soon work on prime factorization to reduce fractions will begin. The study of polygons is in the forecast . Friday math sessions are highlighted with the study of pre-algebra lessons. Upon learning the order of operations, we have worked on solving equations using addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. Our next area of pre-algebra study focuses on integers and comparing and ordering them. |
The recently held Sixth Grade Talent was a huge success. The audience was treated to various presentations such as piano selections, singing acts, karate demonstrations, comedy skits and dance routines. The reaction of those in attendance was very positive and they demonstrated their enjoyment with enthusiatic applause. Job well done boys and girls. Look out Broadway...make way for the Sixth Grade!
Don't forget that book reports are due on the fifteenth of every month. Remember....readers are leaders!
